Magnificent Wilderness. Lowland Gorilla & Forest Elephants.

Conjuring up the misty jungle scenes of Tarzan lore, Republic of Congo, often known as Congo Brazzaville or French Congo, is the smaller and more peaceful neighbor of the Democratic Republic of Congo, oil-rich, rainforest-dense and famous for its western lowland gorillas. Home to over 120,000 of these gentle beasts – their isolation from humans largely preserved by inhospitable swamps – Congo Brazzaville draws its name from its capital city on the Congo River – a buzzing metropolis renowned for its traditional craft markets and the 20th-century Basilique Sainte-Anne with its green-tiled roof and spire. But it is the country’s magnificent wilderness areas that attract nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

Run by African Parks, Odzala National Park in the far northwest of the country is arguably the most significant stronghold for both western lowland gorilla and forest elephant left in Africa. A massive 13,600 square kilometer wonderland of deep forest, endless rivers and sunlit patches of savanna, this huge reserve is also home to thousands of tree, plant, fungi and insect species, approximately 440 bird and 100 mammal species, and one of the planet’s most diverse primate populations. It is a true paradise for those wishing to experience the primal allure of Africa.
