Zambia is a landlocked country in southern Africa slightly larger than the US state of Texas. It consists mostly of high plateau, averaging 1,300 metres above sea level and dissected by river valleys. Though situated in the tropical belt of south central Africa, Zambia’s elevation gives it a moderate climate.
Zambia gained its independence in 1964 and under Dr Kenneth Kaunda became a Commonwealth Republic. In 1972 the country was declared a one party state but reverted to multi party politics in December 1990. The population of Zambia is roughly ten million and 10 percent live in the capital Lusaka; English is the official language of the Country. The basis of Zambia’s economy is the mining of copper and cobalt, which together provide more than 90 percent of the countries foreign exchange earnings. Extensive efforts are being made to diversify its economic base through agriculture, manufacturing and international tourism.
This is a country dominated by wilderness and an amazing sense of space. It boasts some of the Continents least visited National Parks. Lush river valleys and floodplains offer excellent habitat for a huge range of wildlife species, as do the dense woodlands that cover much of the country. This vast land has 19 National Parks, more than 20 different tribal groups, rich animal life, exciting angling and friendly people. One of Africa’s safari gems Zambia is relatively undeveloped and unexplored. The true spirit of going on safari is alive and well in Zambia with simple, bush camps, excellent canoeing and wonderful walking.
